“ MMA really toughened up our son.”
“He is one of the fastest players in his hockey program, and is in by far the best condition of any of the players. He has no fear knocking down players twice his size. He’s become quite good at defense. I’ve seen him step right in front of an 8th grader in full stride turn his hip and take him down. That takes guts! I’m sure it hurts too. He has no fear of tangling with people.

Also he’s a 4th grade kid who demands fruits and vegetables, including broccoli sprouts, and he drinks water instead of pop or milk even when pop is offered. Yep, he learned this stuff from you. Of course we reinforced it too. He’s not the greatest athlete by nature. His nature is to be a computer and math geek, and MMA has given him confidence.

Now he has the opportunity to compete at sports like hockey, I don’t think he would have been able to compete without an MMA background. We’ve had a great relationship with ASMA and you will always be highly recommended by our family.”

Mixed Martial Arts

A Bold and Personal Message From Eric Aasen
Owner of American Top Team in Savage, MN with 35 of Martial Arts Experience
Don’t Be Fooled By The Imitators!

Lets face it, traditional martial arts (TMA’s) have had a stranglehold on the martial arts world in Minnesota for as long as I can remember. Sorry to sound so harsh and I am not trying to be mean-spirited, I am just telling the truth. But taking martial arts for self-defense purposes at any of the local stripmall karate centers is like learning to swim without ever going into the water!  You see them about every half-mile about the size of a Subway sandwich shop with a window full of trophies each one claiming to have a world champion. That always amazes me,  that every city and suburb can boast a world champion.

For myself, studying martial arts for the sole purpose of being able to defend myself, training for hours every day, seven days a week in a resisting environment, only to see the Joker down the street give out a black belt to an eight-year-old who holds his hands at his hips and can’t grapple. And get this, the adults have to call him Sir!! This saddens me and demeans the purpose of martial arts.

To me this is the greatest disservice you could do the public!

Now, there are great benefits you can get from practicing traditional martial arts. Unfortunately self-defense is not one of them! Here is the plus side: you can receive all of the same benefits the traditional martial arts gives you here, but with integrating mixed martial arts into your life instead of traditional martial arts you will get real-world self-defense!

Now the USA karate’s, National Karate’s, ATA’s, Community Eds, anything with the ‘do’ after it will tell you that Mixed Martial Arts is just a sport, that there’s a referee and you can’t do this and you can’t do that.

To them I say… Watch UFC #1. The early UFC’s didn’t have rules, weight classes, gloves and you could do anything. Down elbows to the neck, grabbing, and striking the groin. A gentleman’s rule was implemented to say that you shouldn’t bite or eye gouge, but they didn’t say couldn’t, just that you shouldn’t, and if you did eye gouge or bite you just didn’t get paid. People did bite and people did eye gouge. I tell you the TMA’s didn’t fare well, sometimes it was downright embarrassing how ill-prepared they were for a real confrontation!

“Well, what about multiple opponents?”

They will ask.  Shoot, give me a break!  If you can’t take on one guy, what makes you think you can take on two or three or four? And I got news for all of the people who grew up watching their favorite movie star take on 20 guys! That’s fake, that’s Hollywood, remember that in Hollywood Peter Pan can fly.

Mixed Martial Arts is not violent, it’s just real. Real self-defense is ugly, and to the uneducated might seem violent. It is no more violent than football, hockey or boxing.

We teach two different variations of Mixed Martial Arts here at American School of Martial Arts. One is for the competitor who wants to step in the cage.  We teach what he can and cannot do.

The other version is for self-defense where there aren’t any rules. And if you’re still on the fence here’s the deal breaker!

The Army and Marine Corps threw away all of their old, antiquated, useless self-defense moves and systems taken from the traditional martial arts! And implemented Mixed Martial Arts as their weaponless self-defense system!

The Army and Marine Corps only use what works.  If they find something that works better, they implement it immediately because soldiers lives are on the line!

Makes me darn proud to know that they took Mixed Martial Arts and implemented it into their combative systems!

So, for the best training, whether you are competitor, or looking for the best self-defense, while getting the best shape of your life, you know what to do!

The promise of students getting a black belt has made most martial arts schools water their system down to the point of being useless.  And I am upset with kids receiving false confidence with a very good chance of having that confidence wiped out one day by a bully, wrestler, or just some backyard scuffling.  It upsets me that so many people are getting ripped off.

Caveat Emptor – Buyer Beware!!

BEWARE!   BEWARE!   BEWARE!

Not all who advertise Mixed Martial Arts or MMA are teaching MMA!

After years of negative marketing and bashing MMA, some karate gyms are now “experts” in the field.  Don’t be fooled!  If you go in to watch a MMA class and they are wearing uniform tops and a belt: don’t walk, run!! (Unless it’s a kids class, they need to learn how to manipulate clothing for self defense and they need belts to learn goal setting strategies and a sense of accomplishment.) If they are doing point karate (look it up on YouTube) sparring, get out of there fast!

A lot of todays Jiu-Jitsu gyms advertise MMA, but when you go in you realize you are doing collar chokes instead of real MMA.   In the 1990’s, Jiu Jitsu gyms were started with the pretense that Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu were dominating MMA, so that is MMA!  Not true today.  Everything evolves and so did MMA.

Todays athlete needs a whole different class of skill sets,
and here at ASMA, we do just that! Whether its competition or self defense, we are here to help you reach your goals!

Jason Hiveley, 41 – Attorney from Prior Lake

We live by the maxim “If you see it taught, you see it fought!”

In theory, you could blend Tae Kwon Do and Tai Chi and call it Mixed Martial Arts, but that would be misleading! What works best are martial arts whose training curriculum requires that you practice your skills against a resisting opponent.

Thaiboxing, Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu (Gracie/Brazilian), Combat Sambo, Boxing and Wrestling seems to answer almost every question of what would happen in a MMA competition.

Mixed Martial Arts just happens to be the best form of Self Defense on the planet. That is why the Army and Marine Corps threw away most of their old, antiquated, outdated self defense system and adapted MMA as their core curriculum. Why? ’cause it works!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu 30 Day Free Trial In Savage

Warning:  “If you can’t defend yourself on the ground, then you cannot defend yourself!”

Right here in Savage, people are discovering the secrets of one of the world’s most proven and effective ground-fighting and self-defense martial art: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!

And Believe It Or Not… You Can Try Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Program Out For 30 FREE Days!

You see that “Warning” at the top there, well, it’s there for good reason. Because if you’re the least bit serious about learning how to defend yourself, then you absolutely must know the proven, “battle-tested” ground-fighting techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Here’s why…

“Most – nearly ALL – fights end up on the ground or in grappling range at one point or another.” That’s a FACT.

That means basically that if you don’t know how to defend yourself on the ground, you’re putting yourself (and even your loved ones) at extreme risk.

Let’s face it. If Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a “must-know” thing for profession mixed martial arts fighters like the guys fighting in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) these days, it should most definitely be a “must-know” for pretty much anyone.

That’s because the “fight-ending submissions” and “fight-controlling positions” of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu have been battle-tested in combat, in a cage, in a ring and on the street.

“Skinny Guy From Brazil Wins 1st UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Using ‘Secret’ Grappling Techniques”

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (or “BJJ”) has been around for a long time, long before a no-holds-barred fighter from Brazil named Royce Gracie made it popular in the early ‘90s when he won the very first UFC – which at the time were “bare knuckle” and had “no rules” – and he won it in dominating fashion, ending all of his fights on the ground using his BJJ “secret techniques”.

The crazy thing about what Royce Gracie did was that he was only around 180 pounds when he fought. He was this skinny little guy; he didn’t “look” like a fighter. But he won and exposed a glaring weakness in all of martial arts… that most people were absolutely clueless on how to defend themselves once a fight got to the ground.

At the time these mysterious moves this fighter was using were secrets to MOST people because hardly anybody in America was aware of them at the time. You had these huge, strong, scary-looking guys who had skills on their feet but once they got within grappling range, the fight went to the ground and it was all over.

“The Ultimate Self Defense & Ground Fighting System”

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was developed over many, many years as a fighting and self-defense system that will allow a smaller, weaker person to control a much bigger, stronger opponent using technique.

These techniques were proven effective in combat years ago and still today, the world’s top mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters are ALL learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

And just because the world’s best fighters are using THIS particular martial art on the ground, doesn’t mean you have to be a “fighter” or some kind of world class athlete to learn it. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for EVERYONE!

“You Don’t Have To Be A Fighter To Enjoy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu”

Dan Michener, 36 – Deputy Sheriff

It doesn’t matter if you’re older or young, if you’re big and looking to lose weight or small and looking to build strength… it doesn’t matter if you’re male or female… or even if you want to compete or not (and in our program, you don’t need to want to compete; most people who want to try BJJ aren’t interested in competition)… in shape or out of shape, ALL are welcome…

As a matter of fact, there are all kinds of people from right here in Savage discovering the benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) training at American School of Martial Arts, and if you haven’t checked it out for yourself yet, then, well, you’re missing out big time.

Because while BJJ will teach you how to defend yourself once a fight gets in the grappling range or on the ground, it also gets you in great shape, builds strength and flexibility, and is pretty darn fun, too.

Here is some of what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training here at American School of Martial Arts Will Do For You…

Shows You How To Defend Yourself – You’ll learn how to defend yourself on the street, if an attacker grabs you, and you’ll discover how to handle things once a fight goes to the ground – whether you’re on the top or on the bottom… and even if your attacker is much bigger and stronger than you  are. Because BJJ is based on using superior leverage and body positioning to overcome bigger stronger attackers, it is one of the most important martial arts to learn

Encourages Fat Loss – BJJ is a martial art that focuses on total body positioning, meaning you’re using 100% of your body at all times to maximize its effectiveness. That means your cardio will get better along with your overall body strength, resulting in fat loss. By practicing BJJ you will work every single muscle in your body – doing that burns a lot of calories, which in turn burns a lot of fat.

Builds Strength, Power & Endurance – You will strengthen and develop muscles you never even know existed! But don’t let that scare you…it’s a good thing… because instead of building up useless, bloated gym muscles, you’ll develop real, functional muscles and functional strength by doing sport-specific exercises… while still being able to make your body look fantastic.

Develops Mental Toughness – It takes a degree of mental toughness to put yourself in uncomfortable positions at the mat. When someone is trying to control you, it can get even more uncomfortable – especially if you don’t know what you’re doing. However, by learning BJJ and applying the concepts, you’ll feel more in control of your body and your mind, and the uncomfortable positions will soon become no problem.

Improves Your Cardio & Conditioning – You’ll get in kick-butt shape learning how to do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with us. Just by coming to practice and learning the moves, your body will start to transform and your muscles will condition themselves to handle the training. You’ll notice your cardio and breathing getting better, your lungs will get stronger and you’ll feel your muscles get more toned. A bonus of all that is that not only will you feel better, you’ll look better… and people WILL notice.

Increases Your Flexibility – You won’t become muscle-bound and stiff like many people do who just lift weights all the time. You’ll still build strength training BJJ while at the same time become more flexible. You don’t have to be flexible to start training BJJ.

Reduces Stress – It’s a fact that regular exercise is not only healthy – it’s a key element in reducing stress in your life. A problem with plain-old “gym workouts” is that they usually get pretty boring – but not with BJJ training – with BJJ training, you’re in a positive environment of constant learning (which is another key element in stress reduction). You’re getting taught by our trained instructors to continually get better each and every time you step on our mats… and not only that, you’ll have coaches and teammates helping you along the way. So if you’ve had a stressful day, you can rest assured your stress levels will be reduced the minute you walk into our academy.

Doesn’t Get Boring… In Fact, It’s FUN! – Our students are having a ton of fun learning BJJ. Let’s face it. Going to a regular gym can be boring, especially when you’re going through the same old routine day in and day out. Instead of walking from machine to machine like some kind of zombie, you’ll be able to actually learn something that could save your life while at the same time getting in spectacular shape and learning to defend yourself. You’ll be constantly learning and applying techniques that could save your life and you’ll be doing it in an atmosphere that promotes fun and learning.

When I started taking martial arts as a kid, I wanted to learn how to defend myself.

I think that’s why most people get into the martial arts. Of course there are other benefits like weight loss, improved flexibility, toning up your muscles, and faster reflexes. For kids, the benefits include increased attention span, laserlike focus, burning off that excess energy, bringing them out of their shell, and calming them down a little. But at the core of everything, defending yourself is what the martial arts are about. I don’t much like to say martial arts I would rather say martial skills. And martial means military so think about this, military skills.

As my old sensei used to say the art to kill and cripple. He used to have a lot of good sayings. One of his favorite rants was about this topic exactly. He would often state, “If you want to get better muscles, lift weights.  If you want improved cardio, run-up Squaw Peak with your motorcycle on your back (Squaw Peak was a mountain close to the gym).  If you want peace of mind, study Zen meditation.  If you want to learn how to protect yourself study martial arts. Everything else is just a side benefit.” Truer words have never been spoken about the martial arts. At the core, most people come in because they want to learn how defend themselves. When they can defend themselves, this increases their confidence and changes their persona, this is just one of the many benefits.

Years ago when you drove around town all you would see is karate and tae kwon do gyms.  Not anymore, what happened?

On November 12, 1993 something changed. It was called the Ultimate Fighting Championship or back then it was the Ultimate Fighting Challenge, the UFC. What this did was show us that not all martial arts are created equal! The UFC was designed to test which martial art would prevail when one martial art style was put up against another.  In other words, which martial art was the most prepared for true self defense. The competitors were not cross trained, they were purists.

Now, with today’s mixed martial arts athletes, a lot of competitors know many skill sets, and it’s athlete versus athlete, not martial art versus martial art.

I kind of miss the old days when there weren’t any weight classes, time limits were nonexistent, hair pulling and groin shots were standard practice, and no one was wearing gloves.  Some wore mouthpieces, some didn’t. What they showed us was that most martial arts don’t prepare you for real situations.

The martial artists that fared the best were kickboxers, wrestlers and jujitsu guys. But in the early days before anyone knew anything, Gracie Jiu Jitsu reigned supreme. Why is this so?  Because Gracie Jiu Jitsu was made for this. But as with anything, it wasn’t for everyone. So a sportive version of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu evolved and Jiu Jitsu competitions flourished. If you don’t want to get punched or kicked, and don’t want to step into the ring to fight no holds barred, how do you compete practicing jujitsu?  Why Jiu Jitsu tournaments of course.

But then something happened.

A watered-down version of Gracie jujitsu came into practice where you never have to worry about punches, kicks or head butts, so you can hold your hands in different spots because there wasn’t a threat.  You could play a different game and go for unrealistic moves since there wasn’t a threat of getting hit. Pretty soon a lot of people didn’t train Jiu Jitsu for strikes at all, just the sportive aspect of it where you get so many points for a takedown and more points for passing guard, points for sweeps, advantages for this or that, and pretty soon you have a watered-down version of what was a pure form of self-defense.  This became a martial art no longer practiced and trained for reality.  But practicing the sportive version has many benefits. Conditioning, fast submissions, and competitive mindset.  We practice the sportive version also, but our main goal is for self defense.

Royce Gracie and Dan Michener (St Paul Police Officer) at a seminar right here in Savage.

The only place in Minnesota to train with Royce Gracie.

Royce Gracie Seminar

If your goal is self-defense and you are only learning sport Jiu Jitsu where the focus is solely on point tournaments, I hate say this, but practicing this way is not as beneficial as learning the self defense aspect of Gracie Jiu Jitsu.  Go to any Jiu Jitsu tournament and you will see how watered down Jiu Jitsu has become.  You will see people starting from their butt.  I kid you not, they will shake hands and then sit down to avoid a takedown.  How is this even close to representing anything related to self defense?

Learning the sportive aspect of jujitsu isn’t bad, just make sure you’re also learning the self-defense part of it so you don’t end up learning a martial art that is designed just for sport and not self defense. At the core of Jiu Jitsu lies a hidden gem of some of the best self-defense known to man.

“The Jiu-Jitsu that I created was designed to give the weak ones a chance to face the heavy and strong. It was so successful that they decided to create a sportive version of it. I would like to make it clear that of course I am not in favor of the sportive practice of Jiu-Jitsu, based on rules and time limits, which benefits the heavier, stronger, and more athletic individuals. The primary objective of Jiu-Jitsu is to empower the weak who, for not having the physical attributes, are often intimidated. My Jiu-Jitsu is an art of self-defense in which rules and time limits are unacceptable. These are the reasons for which I can’t support events that reflect an anti Jiu-Jitsu.”   -Helio Gracie

We practice Gracie Jiu Jitsu under Royce Gracie, the first UFC champion. He is the son of Helio Gracie who modified the Japanese jujitsu to make it more leverage based instead of strength-based.

“Punch a black belt in the face, he becomes a brown belt. Punch him again, purple…”        -Carlson Gracie

While training here, you will learn the techniques that are applicable when striking is involved. Helios comment states that the Jiu Jitsu he created was for self-defense and not sportive tournaments. Carlsons quote is enlightening in that he trained many world champion jujitsu guys into MMA champions. Through this trial and error process, he noted that when strikes are added (if the Jiu Jitsu practitioner is improperly trained in the art of self-defense), you can make a seasoned black belt a white belt by simply striking him.

Tom Bremnar, 20 – College Student, Savage

Robert Drysdale, a very famous jujitsu practitioner turned MMA fighter, was quoted as saying that when he started training for strikes, he put 50% of his Jiu Jitsu away on the shelf to be used at a later date when he returned a point tournaments. In other words, 50% of the jujitsu that he was practicing was not applicable when strikes were involved.

“The Origins of Jiu-Jitsu: The Father of All Fights”

By Dr. Helcio Leal Binda and revised by Reyson Gracie

Not So Brief History

Jiu-Jitsu is the oldest and most complete scientific martial art of self-defense. In real combat it is the unbeatable against any other form of fight. It is superior because it is complete.

Jiu-Jitsu is divided into:

  1. Throws and Take-downs (judo)
  2. Strikes (karate-jitsu)
  3. Twists (Aiki-jitsu)
  4. Chokes
  5. Pressures
  6. Pins
  7. Positions (posture, momentum of attack and avoidance, standing up, on the ground, and in various kinds of clothes).

Origin

Despite contradictory versions, the origin of jiu-jitsu is unquestionably India, the birth place of unparalleled religions and culture.

Buddhist monks were the creators of the most complete form of personal defense of all times, which was jiu-jitsu, the father of all fights. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the origins of Buddhism in order to understand the formation of what in later centuries was called by the Japanese as, “The Art Suave”, or the technique of self-defense, such that with a minimum of force, without the need for brute force, a weaker defender can defeat a physically much stronger adversary.

Buddhism

Some 2,500 years ago, in the North of India, some miles above Benares, Siddhartha Gautama was born. He was a member of the Sakya tribe, that spoke either Pali or Sanskrit. He was a scholar of great intelligence who launched the religion that carried his name and soon developed all over India. He became known as The Buddha, which meant “The Enlightened One”. One of his principle concerns was how to leave his followers with the great culture and general knowledge with which to better spread his system.

Among his followers, monks in far away monasteries who were obliged to travel through the interior of India, and had to defend against the attacks of bandits who infested the region, there were some who were the real creators of this kind of fight that allowed self-defense without using weapons that would violate the morals of the religion. In this way was born the jiu-jitsu with the spirit of defense that is its fundamental element.

The application of physical laws, such as leverage, momentum, equilibrium, center of gravity, and a detailed study of the vital points of the human body, allowed them to create the art of scientific fighting.

Propagation

The spread of jiu-jitsu would come about in later centuries, that is, about 250 A.C. when the King of India was Devanamapriya Priyadarism, also known as King Asoka, two centuries after Buddha. Embracing Buddhism, Asoka developed it and created thousands of monasteries inside and outside of India. In this way, Buddhism and with it, jiu-jitsu reached Ceylon, Burma and Tibet, and later, Thailand and all of Southeast Asia and eventually, China, and finally Japan where it grew and got a great push. And it spread subsequently to the Western world. Jit-jitsu entered Japan before the birth of Christ.

The death of Adoka brought a disaster to Buddhism and consequently to jiu-jitsu. The Brahmins who adored the religion of the Brahma, that flourished before Buddhism, were prejudiced against the spirit of Buddhism and mounted a campaign to expel the Buddhist monks from India, and this is the reason for the small influence of jiu-jitsu in India.

The philosophy of Zen, which arose in Buddhism, without a doubt, is a trace left by the old Buddhist sects that knew jiu-jitsu.

Jiu-Jitsu: Father of all Fights

In its migration from India to all of the Asian continent, jiu-jitsu became diversified and gave origin to various styles of fight. After a thousand years, these were:

Sumo, which without kimono, uses the take downs and unbalancing techniques of jiu-jitsu. It is essentially a traditional sport.

Kenpo-Jitsu, which is the art of applying damaging strikes using jiu-jitsu atemi techniques, with the arms. Kenpo was first called, “Chinese boxing”. It was born in the South of China and spread out to various areas, including the island of Okinawa, where, about 300 years later, it came to be called Karate-jitsu. (the art of fighting with empty hands). Much of kenpo which became karate, came  from the “atemi” of jiu-jitsu. However it was in Japan that it grew and became enriched and was transformed into the more complete and better system of self-defense that we know today.

More than 100 distinct styles were created and put in the service of feudal lords in their wars. With the passage of time, jiu-jitsu became a major martial art of the Japanese and one of their national treasures. Although they were men of small size, jiu-jitsu made them to be powerful and unbeatable against the Westerners.

Birth of Judo

In the middle of the last century, a grave threat presented itself to the Japanese people, resulting in serious danger to their great secret of jiu-jitsu. Japan, which until that time had kept itself closed off to the greedy Westerners, received on July 8th of 1853 a visit from a North American squadron of [four steam ships with big guns] ships commanded by Commodore Perry [Mathew C.] When Perry met the Japanese Shogun, he gave him a letter demanding that Japan open up its ports. [He also blew up some buildings to show that he wasn’t joking and told the Japanese to let him know if they wanted him to stop].

Perry returned the next year (1854) with a new squadron of [twice as many] ships. In the meantime the Japanese decided to open the ports of Shimoda and Hakodate, both small and unimportant.

In 1869 the Emperor defeated the Shogun. The Meiji era was initiated and new ports were thrown open. In 1871 the emperor initiated major social reforms to address the threat posed by the Westerners. The “Westernization” of Japan and consequent penetration by foreigners was initiated in this period. What had been until then a country closed off to the covetous Europeans and Americans, now faced serious challenges.

Fake Jiu-Jitsu

The small Japanese, with their knowledge of jiu-jitsu, had the conditions to defeat the bigger, and stronger foreigners. However, at this very moment, jiu-jitsu, which had been the technical superiority of the Japanese, vanished from view.

The curiosity of the foreigner to learn the famous system of fight came to be a major problem for the sons of the land of the rising sun. The Japanese government decided to create a bogus style of jiu-jitsu for external use, without efficiency for real fights. An employee in the Ministry of Culture who was also a jiu-jitsu teacher, was chosen to create a fake jiu-jitsu for “the English to see” (para ingleses ver). Thus was born the Kano system of jiu-jitsu (that later was baptized with the name of Judo), created by a civil servant named Jigaro Kano who (in 1882) founded the Kodokan school.

Thus the secrets of jiu-jitsu were hidden from the eyes of foreigners. Books and other publications about the real jiu-jitsu were confiscated.

One hundred and thirteen styles of jiu-jitsu and thousands of schools changed their names to “judo”. Teaching jiu-jitsu to foreigners became a crime of treason. The sport of judo, which had now become nothing more than the sport of jiu-jitsu throws and take downs [quedas], was exported to the West accompanied by a tremendous propaganda effort. The Japanese continued to train jiu-jitsu, but secretly. Recently, after the death of Kano, they felt that judo was hobbled, in relation to jiu-jitsu, and so, without the disturbing presence of Kano, they surreptitiously introduced into judo a style of jiu-jitsu to provide self-defense techniques for judokas, who by then knew only sports judo. In this way, goshin-jitsu was introduced into judo.

Goshin-Jitsu

In the same spirit, at the beginning of this century, Professor Funakoshi transformed karate-jitsu (a style of jiu-jitsu) into a sport that was useless for real fights and called it karate-do.

Karate-do, like judo, expanded rapidly in the West accompanied by lots of propaganda.

Aikijitsu & Aikido

Not satisfied with dismembering jiu-jitsu, around the beginning of the century, the Japanese then made a sport out of the joint twisting curriculum of jiu-jitsu, which became aiki-jitsu, which in turn led to aikido.

Introduction of Jiu-Jitsu into Brazil

In 1914, a world champion of jiu-jitsu, Kosei Maeda, known as Conde Koma, who won great victories all over the world against every style of fighting, arrived in Brazil. In Belem do Para, Koma taught the real jiu-jitsu to his diligent student, Carlos Gracie, who moved to Rio in 1920 with his brothers, of whom he was the uncontested leader, and established the first academy of jiu-jitsu, at Rua Marques de Abrantes, Praia do Flamengo.

From that time on, jiu-jitsu spread with blood and sweat. Fighting with kimono, previously unknown to Brazilians, proved itself with victories over all styles that existed in Brazil, such as capoeira, Greco-Roman, boxing, and later, sports judo, and recently, sports karate.

The epic and unforgettable fights of Helio Gracie, against physically stronger adversaries, put Brazilian jiu-jitsu above all the other styles of fight. The successive victories of skinny men over muscular giants, quickly made believers out of even the most skeptical doubters, in the invincibility of jiu-jitsu. After years of victories and studies to improve the ground fighting aspect of the style known as Brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu, jiu-jitsu fighting was launched, which included punches and kicks.

The Television Program “Herois do Ringue”

Launched in the 1950’s, Herois do Ringue showed the world examples of real jiu-jitsu fighting, as in the time of Imperial Japan, when there were jiu-jitsu fights, sometimes to the death, in the presence of the Emperor. Western people hadn’t seen such violent fights before, and Herois do Ringue suffered from a campaign against it by people with competing interests. Finally it was banned, despite epic resistance by lovers of jiu-jitsu. As announced that it would immediately withdraw from participation (afastamento) the first time that a fight didn’t have the characteristics of real combat.

Jiu-jitsu, thus practiced, was called Luta Livre Americana, or Vale Tudo, and later, Luta Livre Brasileira, and finally, Jiu-Jitsu sem kimono or Luta Livre de Jiu-Jitsu.

Currently, jiu-jitsu Brasileiro is expanding internationally, as a result of the work done during the 1920’s by Carlos Gracie who passed along to his brothers the knowledge that he learned from Conde Koma. Later, successor and faithful student of the ideas of his older brother, Helio Gracie, maintained the tradition helping to bring up the new generation, among whom notable names are Carlson Gracie, Rolls Gracie, Rickson Gracie, Royce Gracie, and too many other names to mention, but who deserve admiration and respect.

Look out now… This ain’t your cardio kickboxing at your local health club class!!

This is the real deal.  The art of eight limbs as it is sometimes called. This is the ultimate stand up martial art, which utilizes punches, kicks, knees and elbows. As far as a standup martial art goes, it gives you the most options, and we live by the idea of ‘keep it simple’. When defending yourself, you don’t want to have to think.  Your body should just react. And the only way for that to happen is if you train core basic moves over and over and over and over and over and over and over, so that you no longer have to think when it comes time to defend yourself.  Your body just kicks into automatic pilot, and off you go.

When it comes down to defending yourself, one thing people are surprised about is that it’s ugly, uncoordinated, sloppy movements compared to pretty Hollywood choreographed movies. We are used to seeing Hollywood stars beating up 20 bad guys without breaking a sweat. When reality that’s just not possible.

When you’re in a self-defense situation, your heartbeat raises, your adrenaline kicks in, and all the blood flows to the large muscle groups like your biceps, triceps, quads and hamstrings, so the power punching, the simple kicks, devastating knees and elbows of Thaiboxing work really well in a standup self-defense situation.

John Riegert, 52 – Master Mechanic, New Prague

Class starts out with the warm-up followed by technique, explanation, then the focus mitt, Thai pad, or heavy bag workout will begin. After that, we will partner drill the same combination in a safe manner so you can see where were the punches and kicks will land. Then we will be taught the counter how to block it. And then to round out the evening we will be doing conditioning drills.

It will take about a year of consistent practice to be comfortable defending yourself in a standup situation, but after that one year you will be a lean mean fighting machine for self-defense purposes. Of course you will have lost weight, toned up, and retained that youthful flexibility. So throw away those fat pants and get to class.
